Shonni
Chapter 17
Like a K9 trained to sniff out narcotics, I could smell a stank-nasty attitude on a bitch from a mile away—which was exactly what I smelled when I walked into Jaels; along with the usual mixture of chemicals and the scent of hot iron. Jael was in the middle of rehashing the latest episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race to the salon’s stylists and afternoon patrons but as soon as I made my presence known, the conversation stopped and the whispers started.
“Hey, y’all.”
“Hey, snow girl Shonni” Jael was slow to speak.
“What is wrong with everybody up in here?” I asked, wasting no time to clear the air.
“Yeah…that’s her friend,” I heard Jella—the newest addition to the crew. We met her when Kameera and I had hit the salon up—whisper in the ear of another Jaels’ stylist.
“Who the fuck is her?” I asked. “Let’s cut to the chase,” I said, ready to cut the first bitch who stepped to me with the box cutter in my purse—including Jael’s ass. “I don’t have to be here if it’s a problem. I can take my money to Kristoff like I been doing sweetness.” I sneered at Jella. She frowned and rolled her eyes, but didn’t say shit. That’s what I thought.
Tink appeared from the back of the salon looking malnourished and like she hadn’t slept in days. She was in desperate need of a trip to Hometown Buffet and a 5-Hour Energy Drink. Her puffy eyes were encased in dark circles, which—on her light skin—appeared to be two black eyes and her hair was unkempt. And that was poor marketing and advertising for a bitch who co-owned a hair salon. She gone have to do somethin’ about that new growth.
“How’s your triflin’ ass friend, Kameera?” She asked, taking me by surprise. Fuck me, I thought, figuring out the reason for the built-up tension in the salon. Kameera must have fucked her man.
“She’s wrong for what she did…as long as Tink’s been doin’ her hair,” Jael contributed his two cents.
“That’s some foul shit to do,” Jella finally found the nerve to speak up. “I called Tink ASAP when I spotted Kameera in the front seat of Dameon’s car.”
“I’m not Kameera. So, any beef you got with her then you need to take it up with her. That’s how a grown ass woman would handle the situation,” I told Tink.
“You’re right,” she said, leaving the matter alone and moving on to the next. “What you want done to today?” She asked, gesturing for me to take a seat in her chair. She must think I’m crazy. There was no way I was letting her up in my head with a pair of scissors and a hot ass flat iron nearby. She ain’t about to fuck my shit up. And I ain’t even the one who
fucked her man.
“I’m cool,” I said, backing out the door and heading to Rash’s Hair Supply to pick up some bags of weave. I would have to call upon Kristoff’ after
